The Skillman Foundation, Detroit, MI
The Skillman Foundation, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010, is dedicated to improving outcomes for the children ofDetroit by strengthening schools and neighborhoods in the city. The Foundation is determined to help lead the effort to create a Detroit where children can be safe, healthy, educated, and prepared for successful lives as adults.
The Foundation is a steady investor in educational excellence in the region and seeks to identify quality where it exists regardless of an individual school’s governance model. The Foundation leads the Excellent Schools Detroit Coalition comprised of community leaders, traditional public and charter school providers, the mayor and other civic leaders. The coalition is committed to dramatic change in the educational landscape of the city. The Excellent Schools Detroit Coalition has committed $200 million over ten years to implement three distinct strategies:
- Real accountability that holds every school to the same high standards and publishes school academic ratings;
- Excellent schools for every student by closing failing schools and establishing 70 new schools in their place; and
- Recruitment and development of the best school leaders and teachers.
